Halo-Vibe 2.0
Sonus is very proud to introduce to you the Halo-Vibe! After more than two years of research and experimentation, I am finally able to present this wonderful sounding Vibe to you. Studying my original early 70s Uni-Vibe, taking measurements of all it's specs and discovering some of it's 'secrets'; I began to get confident I could really nail the essence of that elusive throbbing, heavenly Vibe sound. So what is the Halo-Vibe all about? For starters it does NOT contain a halogen lamp as the name might suggest, instead it is just so sacredly holy sounding that it has a halo! In all seriousness though, the name is derived from, the uniquely Sonus, halo photocell arrangement around the lightbulp.
As you might expect from a Sonus pedal; no compromises, no-nonsense, no LEDs, no keyhangers and stickers, just a pedal that totally nails it! It is housed in a big turquoise or black painted box that is accompanied by a foot controller that adjusts the speed of the Vibe. It is fully compatible with an original vintage foot controller or replica provided by Shin-Ei/Vibe-Bro (DIN-5).
The PCB is a replica of the original PCB with lightbulb trimmer and aluminum lightbox which is reflective on the inside. No mods or low noise parts. The Vibe uses general purpose C828 transistors like the original did, producing similar noise levels. It comes with it's own AC power adapter to ensure the same voltage it is biased with during AB testing with the original Uni-Vibe.
The cancel mode sends the signal straight through the Vibe's own built in pre-amp! I personally love it and it works great with silicon fuzz for that 1970s Jimi tone. It was only recently I realized that all of Jimi's live performances with a Uni-Vibe (in the off position) were played through the CANCEL mode the whole time! A factor to his 70s (fuzz) tone mostly overlooked. For those who want the option to have it completely removed from the chain the Halo now also features a true-bypass switch. The DIN5 footswitch jack socket has now been moved to the back of the panel and the true-bypass switch is conveniently housed on top.
So how does it compare to an original? It sounds identical to the original and the controls behave in the same way too. From the foot controller sweep, with the heel position CANCEL mode, to that typical INTENSITY versus SPEED interplay an original Vibe will give you. When dialing the INTENSITY back, the tone changes to a more 'woody' sound, this behavior is one of the hardest things to nail from the original and the Halo-Vibe delivers! Playing the Vibe, somehow makes you feel like you are playing 'through' it instead of hitting an 'effect' wall. Your guitar notes will float through it like pulsating liquidy water :-)
